As an African-American contemporary dance artist and choreographer with a versatile career across

multiple dance genres (Concert Dance, Broadway, Television and Film), my artistic objective is to reflect

my multifaceted identity in all of my work and push the boundaries of embodied experience.

Although I prefer to generate movement through an abstract lens on a concert dance stage, I naturally

find ways to integrate my other training influences into the work. The power of dance lies in its ability to

illustrate the human experience in ways that exceed words. My work is inspired by a myriad of

influences, however, I am currently most interested in creating work motivated by universal human

experiences (the beauty and conflict of love, the vast power of imagination), socio-political issues, and

the general malaise of modern American life. From these sources, I begin to develop my ideas through

an intuitive visualization process, in which I free my mind in order to visualize color, theatrical

composition, sound, texture, and mood; thus developing the inspiration for movement.

As a kinesthetic learner and mover, I instinctually tap into a movement vocabulary that is informed by my

training background in western classical dance techniques and contemporary dance values. Moreover, I

am attracted to expansive movement that uses space with curvilinear lines. As a contemporary dance

artist, I aim to filter my lived experiences, imagination, personal perspective, and curiosity through my

choreographic work.

Collaboration is an essential value of mine. As a choreographer, I aim to deliver a clear artistic vision

while also creating space for the dance artists to establish their own individuality and point of view

within the work. My motto while choreographing is, “Bring yourself into the movement” highlighting the

uniqueness of every dancer’s embodied experience and their agency in devising art. By allowing dancers

to unabashedly insert themselves into the process of shaping movement, I find that this encourages

them to take more ownership of the material, creating a more authentic and honest performance

experience for the audience.
